  • Knockout format Critical Hit style tournament
  • If we have fewer than 20 players, the knockout portion will be 4 strikes.
  • If we have 20 or more players, the knockout portion will be 3 strikes.
  • Doors open at 11:00am for practice
  • Earn spell cards from 12:00pm-2:00pm
  • Remaining spell cards are auctioned after final experience building round completes
  • Knockout phase begins once the card auction ends
  • Auction ends once all cards are gone or a card does not receive a minimum bid
  • $10 to enter, 100% goes towards prize pool
  • FREE ENTRY by rolling a CRITICAL HIT when registering
  • Please bring snacks/drinks to share

2018 Roll for Initiative, Knockout format Critical Hit Tournament

This will be a Critical Hit style knockout tournament inspired by and using Karl DeAngelo's series of Critical Hit cards. Rolling a D20 and playing cards before or during a game puts an interesting and fun twist on this event.

General Course Rules:
  • Upon registration, every player will receive one random spell card.
  • Players with an IFPA rank > 1,000 will receive one additional random spell card at registration.
  • From 12:00pm-2:00pm, players can earn spell cards through group match play.
  • Any spell cards remaining after the experience building period will be auctioned off with a minimum $1 bid.
  • If we have 20 or fewer players, one deck will be used. If we have 21 or more players, two decks will be used.
  • The knockout portion of the tournament will begin once the auction portion is complete.
  • The PAPA / IFPA Rulebook will be used for any necessary rulings.
  • 100% of the prize pool will be paid back.
  • Bang backs and death saves are not allowed.
  • Rulings will adhere to the PAPA/IFPA Tournament Rules as closely as possible.

Experience Building:
  • Players will be placed into groups of 3 or 4.
  • Top two players after each game will earn a spell card.
  • Upon the conclusion of this phase, additional spell cards, if available, will be auctioned off.
  • When there are no longer 2 * (number of groups) cards remaining or it is after 2:00pm, the auction will begin if cards remain.
  • Games and positions will be assigned by the tournament software.
  • Players DO NOT play spell cards during this phase.
Prizes will be offered for the following experience building achievements:
If there is a "tie" for a prize, the prize will NOT be paid out!
  • $5 - Most spell cards earned at the end of experience building, pre-auction
  • $10 - Least spell cards earned at the end of experience building, pre-auction
  • $5 - Highest total spell card points, post-auction
  • $10 - Lowest total spell card points, post-auction
Knockout Tournament:
  • Players will be assigned into groups of 3 or 4 at the beginning of each round.
  • Each player rolls a D20.
  • The player with the highest roll gets first choice of game/position.
  • The player with the second highest roll gets second choice, and so on.
  • If a player rolls a CRITICAL HIT [20], they get both game AND position choice.
  • Only open games can be chosen, no waiting for games.
  • After the match, the two players with lowest scores in the group receive a strike.
  • For a three player group, only the lowest scoring player will receive a strike.
  • After a player has 3 strikes (or 4 depending on attendance), they are out of the tournament.
  • During this phase is when players are allowed to play spell cards.
  • Playing spell cards will be explained at the beginning of this phase.
